Visibility Matters: 10 Tips to Safely Tackle Foggy Conditions

Driving during foggy days can be a complete nightmare. The best thing you can do is avoid driving in fog, even if you are a safe driver. Check the weather forecast and see if there is a fog warning and delay your trip until it clears. If that's not possible, follow these simple tips to stay safe.

  1. Watch your speed: You may be going faster than you think. If so, slow down gradually and avoid overtaking, changing lanes and crossing traffic.
  1. Visibility is key: Use low beams. The highlights reflect moisture droplets in the fog, making them difficult to see. Always keep your taillights on and signals turned on so other drivers can spot your car and maintain a safe distance.

  1. Road lighting: Most of the mid-range and low-end cars in India do not have fog lights. If your car doesn't have fog lights, keep yellow cellophane handy. Stick it on your car headlights and turn on the high beams.
  1. Eliminate distractions: Turn off your cell phone and radio. Open the window so you can hear the rest of the traffic on the road.
  1. Stay on the road: Approach the sidewalk and follow the flashing magnetic lights on the side of the road.
  1. Safe distances save lives: Maintain a reasonable distance between your car and the car in front of you. Less distance gives you less time to react when things go wrong.
  1. Warmth for clarity: Fog outside often leads to condensation inside so turn the heater on.
  1. Crystal Clear windshield: Make sure the windshield and windows are clean and that the indicator lights are working. Over time, headlights tend to turn yellow. To avoid this, clean them with toothpaste and warm water.
  1. Don't worry about noise pollution: Sound your horn frequently, especially when changing lanes and turning.
  1. Party after driving: It goes without saying that you should not drink while driving.

Stop to the side of the road if visibility is poor. Turn on your emergency lights, as well as keep your lights on low. Drive carefully.
