How to Transfer Car Ownership Online?

Ownership of the car usually transfers if the car is sold to a new individual. In such cases, it becomes essential as per the motor laws to replace your name on the registration certificate with the name of the new buyer. However, transferring vehicle ownership can be a cumbersome process. Below we have mentioned simple steps to transfer car ownership online.

Reasons for Car Ownership Transfer

Ownership of a four-wheeler is transferred in three main scenarios. These include

  • Death of the car owner: As per the motor laws, car’s ownership has to be transferred to the legal inheritor in case the owner of the vehicle dies.
  • Normal Sale of the Car: In situations where the vehicle is sold to a new buyer, a transfer will take place between the seller and the buyer. The transfer can be within the state or interstate.
  • Public Auction of the Car: Ownership of the vehicle must also be transferred if the vehicle is sold at a government-sponsored public auction.

Documents required to transfer Ownership of Car

Irrespective of the situation, transfer of vehicle ownership requires submission of certain documents to the RTO of the respective state. The following are the documents required to transfer car ownership in this scenario:

  • Form 28: It is a request and grant of NOC by the RTO. This form is mandatory when there is an interstate transfer of vehicle ownership.
  • Form 29: This form is to notify the RTO of transfer of vehicle ownership in case of normal sale.
  • Form 30: It is the application for intimation and transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle.
  • Form 31: This form is an application for transfer ownership in the name of the nominee or person succeeding in the possessing of the car.
  • Form 32: Application for ownership transfer when purchasing the car or acquiring in a public auction
  • PAN Card: PAN cards of both buyer and seller are mandatory in case of vehicle ownership transfer. If PAN number is not available, Form 60 or 61 is required.
  • Registration Certificate: The original R.C. of the vehicle is also required in all these scenarios.
  • PUC Certificate: Pollution Under Control Certificate is also required to transfer vehicle ownership in these scenarios.
  • Address Proof: For transferring ownership of a car, you will also need proof of residence which may be in the form of an electricity bill, ration card or other utility bills.
  • Car Insurance Certificate: A valid car insurance certificate is also mandatory for transfer of car ownership in all the above scenarios.
  • Death Certificate: When the transfer is due to the death of the car owner, a death certificate is also required in respect of the registered owner.
  • Form 35: This form is required for the termination of hypothecation during ownership transfer of the vehicle if it was purchased under hypothecation.

In some states, certain documents may also be required, such as a pencil impression of the chassis and engine, proof of succession, and buyer's commitment.

How to transfer Ownership of Car Online?

Car ownership can be transferred via two means: i.e. offline transfer and online transfer. Below we have mentioned the steps for transferring car ownership online.

An online transfer can be made online by applying on the government's Parivahan Sewa portal. However, this process also includes some offline steps. Take a look:

  • Visit the official Parivahan Sewa website
  • Click on the “Online Services” drop-down and select the “Vehicle-Related Services” option.
  • Select your state from the drop-down list
  • Enter your vehicle registration number and select RTO in the given form 
  • Now select “Ownership Transfer” details on the next page
  • Enter the vehicle registration number and chassis number in the form provided
  • Now enter the One Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number and click on “Submit”
  • Select the “Transfer of Ownership” option in the “Application Entry Form”
  • Now fill the buyer details on the given form and Generate OTP.
  • Enter the OTP and fill the current and permanent address details of the new buyer
  • Enter the rest of the buyer's details and proceed.
  • Now pay the required ownership transfer fees via the desired payment method
  • Download and print the required forms, such as Forms 29 and 30. Make hard copies of both forms and sign them.
  • Once the documents are submitted, click on the “Payment Receipt” option and print the payment receipt.
  • Now upload the filled, scanned and signed forms and documents along with photographs and valid ID cards.
  • Now proceed further and select “Submit”.

Visit the nearest RTO and submit all documents along with forms to the concerned authority. Once all the documents are verified, the new RC will be mailed to you or you can visit the RTO within 2 days to get the new RC physically.

The cost of transferring car ownership

A fee of Rs. 300 is required to be paid in case of a car ownership transfer. For two-wheelers, this fee is Rs. 150 only.

Consequences of not transferring car ownership

Transferring ownership of a car is a mandatory process as per the motor laws of India. If you do not transfer ownership to the new owner, any traffic violations made by the buyer will be subjected to your name.

In addition, any legal proceedings or fines will be imposed on you and you will have to pay it from your pocket even if you are not the car owner anymore.
