With summer approaching all over the country, it is very important to maintain your car's air conditioning system. You don't want to be stuck in a traffic jam on a metal roof under the hot sun and your AC can't handle the load. Let's take a look at 5 tips on how to maintain the AC in your car.
Use it regularly
A common practice among Indian car owners is not to use AC in their cars regularly. A major reason for this is the belief that excessive use of AC increases fuel consumption. However, this is incorrect. Using the AC daily helps keep all running parts in check and if there is a problem, you are more likely to catch it and fix it at an early stage.
Additionally, you should turn on the AC weekly for 10 minutes in defrost mode at the coldest setting and maximum fan speed. This will help maintain gas pressure, keep the compressor running well, clean out moisture, and prevent mold.
Clean/change air filter
The car's air filter needs cleaning from time to time, as it finds dirt and dust accumulated every time the vehicle is removed. This filter is usually located below the dashboard and should also be vacuumed from time to time during general service checks. If it is beyond clean, it is advisable to replace the air filter with a new one.
Do not pre-cool cars
While pre-cooling cars is trendy and seen as an added feature, it is certainly not advisable. A car's air conditioning system works at maximum efficiency when it is in motion. If the car is heated in the sun on a very hot day, turn the fan to maximum as soon as you start driving and only open the rear seat windows for 10 to 20 seconds to force the hot air out. Also, avoid using it at full blast for a long period of time.
Avoid air recirculation
Avoid using the air conditioning in recirculation mode if there are rear passengers in the car. Recirculation mode pulls air from the front of the vehicle and cools it, which works well for passengers in the front of the vehicle, but can leave stale, hot air in the back.
Keep the car clean
It seems obvious, but cleaning the car, especially the interior, is very important for the health of a car. Pollution and bacteria can negatively affect your car's air conditioning system. Clean the inside of the car regularly with a vacuum cleaner. Also, make sure no moisture is trapped under the upholstery or carpet mats from leaking fluids that could harm the car's AC unit.
