The 2024 German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring turned out to be a proper entertainer with some late race drama that in the end saw Ducati Lenovo Team's Pico Bagnaia emerge victorious.
Pecco the impeccable
Pecco Baganaia, who had been struggling to keep up with Jorge Martín all weekend, drove a very measured and mature race. Starting on Greed's second row, Bagnaia made sure he was up front for the first two laps. Bagnaia then made a surprise move on Martin and took the race lead, with Martin and Prema Pramac Racing's Franco Morbidelli chasing behind. Pecco looked like he would once again sail into the distance but a few laps later, Martin struck and regained the lead.
Pecco slipped slipped behind Morbidelli and seemed to be off the pace. However, Paganaya was the smarter driver as he was simply conserving his tire to attack in the latter part of the race.
With a few laps to go, Pecco rose up to P2 and kept piling the pressure on Martin. The duo kept responding to each other's pace and the gap fluctuated between 0.7 and 0.8 seconds.
With two laps to go, Martín seemed comfortable, but disaster struck for the Spaniard. He lost the lead, entered the first corner and ended up giving the victory to Pico. However, we cannot rule out the constant pressure Bagnaia applied on Martin to force him to make a costly mistake. Following the crash, Martin also lost the lead of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship to Bagania, who now sits ten points clear.
Marvellous Marquez
Marc Marquez continues to display his incredible talent and determination as he rose from P13 to P2. This despite him suffering serious injuries after being involved in an accident at the start of the weekend. Marquez, who always dominates the Sachsenring, made some brilliant moves at Turn 13 to move up the ranks. At that moment he collided with Franco Morbidelli, who was returning to the line after going off Turn 1. This caused Márquez to get up from his seat and began to chase Morbidelli to overtake him. He then overtook Gresini Racing Ducati teammate and brother Alex Marquez, who crossed the finish line in third place.
A close Championship
As MotoGP teams head into the three-week summer break, Pecco Bagnaia will be able to relax a bit after returning to the top of the championship standings. Meanwhile, Jorge Martín will recover from the blow he suffered in his Championship campaign and will look to cover the 10-point deficit. Marc Marquez is third with 56 points in the bag.
The next round of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, that will be held from 2nd August to 4th August.
