▼The Kia Sonet has received a disappointing 1-star safety rating in the latest Global NCAP crash tests for adult occupant protection. While this news has caused concern, the evaluated model is specifically the South African spec version manufactured in India. It lacks the standard safety features of the Indian variant, meaning this score does not apply to the six airbag model sold locally.
Understanding the Global NCAP Test Profile
The vehicle evaluated under the Safer Cars for Africa programme was manufactured in India and exported to South Africa. Unlike the Indian variant, this export model features an entirely different safety baseline.
The tested South African vehicle came with only dual front airbags and lacked standard Electronic Stability Control. In contrast, the model sold in India features six airbags and Electronic Stability Control as standard across all variants, making this score non-representative for local buyers. Because of these equipment differences, the crash test results do not accurately represent the safety performance of the vehicle available in showrooms locally.
Adult Occupant Protection Breakdown
During the crash evaluation, the compact SUV secured a score of 21.29 points out of a maximum 34 points for adult occupant safety, leading to the 1-star designation. The final crash report highlighted several positive notes alongside critical structural vulnerabilities.
Frontal Impact Observations
Frontal crash tests showed good head and neck protection for both front occupants. Passenger chest protection was good, while driver chest safety was adequate. However, knee protection was rated marginal due to the potential impact with hard structures behind the dashboard.
Structural Integrity Issues
A primary factor behind the low score was the physical performance of the vehicle frame. The testing agency classified both the footwell area and the main bodyshell as unstable. The report noted that the structural shell was incapable of withstanding any additional crash loads.
Side Impact Testing
In the side impact collision test, the vehicle demonstrated good safety for the head and pelvis, alongside an adequate rating for the abdomen area. However, it offered poor protection for the driver's chest cavity. The more demanding side pole impact test was omitted entirely because the vehicle lacked side curtain head protection airbags.
Child Occupant Protection Performance
The vehicle achieved a much stronger performance in the child safety evaluations, securing 28.57 points out of a possible 49 points to earn a 3-star child protection rating.
Both the 18-month-old and 3-year-old dummies received strong protection in rear-facing child seats using ISOFIX mounts during impact tests. However, the score dropped due to the absence of three-point seatbelts in all seats and the lack of a front passenger airbag deactivation function.

Conclusion
The 1-star safety rating from Global NCAP applies exclusively to the base export model sold in South Africa. Domestic car buyers in India should look at this result with proper context. The local version features six standard airbags, vehicle stability management, and advanced driver assistance systems, offering a substantially more protective cocoon on the road.
