Top 10 Hatchbacks Apr 2022 – WagonR, Baleno, Punch, Tiago, i20

Hatchback sales declined 14.21% in April 2022, with only two models increasing sales year over year.

Total hatchback sales fell 14.21% YoY to 1,06,615 units in April 2021, down from 1,24,278 units sold in April 2021, with a volume decline of 17,663 units. Only two hatchbacks, the Celerio and Glanza, had an increase in demand year over year, while every other hatchback on the list saw a decrease. Sales decreased by 12.59 percent month over month in March 2022, resulting in a volume decrease of 15,357 units. Only the Alto, Celerio, Tiago, i20, and Honda Jazz saw sales increase.

WagonR, Punch, and the Top 10 Hatchbacks for April 2022

Maruti Suzuki has been hurt the worst by declining sales in the compact car market. The WagonR topped the list, with sales falling 4.77 percent year over year to 17,766 units, down from 18,656 in April 2021. Sales declined 27.88% month over month from 24,634 units sold in March 2022. WagonR now holds a 16.66 percent market share, down from 20.20 percent in March 2022.

The Maruti Baleno came in second with a YoY decline of 33.24 percent and a MoM decline of 24.67 percent to 10,938 units. Sales in April 2021 totaled 16,384 units, while sales in March 2022 totaled 14,520 units. In addition, market share fell from 11.90 percent to 10.26 percent month ovar month( MoM).

Maruti Suzuki Alto sales down 39.65% year on year to 10,443 units from 17,303 units sold in April 2021. Sales increased 37.03 percent from March 2022, when 7,621 units were sold. In the last month, market share increased from 6.25 percent in March 2022 to 9.80 percent. Maruti Suzuki Alto 2022 test mules have been circulating. The new Alto will have larger proportions and be built on Suzuki's Heartect platform, which is also used in the Dzire, WagorR, S-Presso, and Swift.

Tata Punch, a relatively new newcomer into the hatchback sector, has sold 10,132 units in the last month, giving it a 9.50 percent market share. Sales fell 3.74 percent month over month from 10,526 units sold in March 2022. The Tata Punch was the second best-selling model in the company's portfolio in the previous month, only behind the Tata Nexon. The Punch costs between Rs 5,82,900 to Rs 9,48,900 presently (ex-showroom).

Sales of the Hyundai i20 NIOS declined 20.94 percent year over year to 9,123 units in April 2022, down from 11,540 in April 2021. In March 2022, sales declined 5.82 percent from 9,687 units sold the previous month. Maruti Suzuki Swift sales fell by 51.42 percent YoY and 34.68 percent MoM to 8,898 units in April 2021, however Celerio sales grew dramatically to 7,066 units, up 1825.34 percent over 367 units sold in April 2021. From 6,442 units sold in March 2022, MoM sales climbed by 9.69%.

Hyundai i20, S-Presso, Tiago

The S-Presso was at the bottom of the list, with sales falling 13.49 percent to 6,694 units in April 2022 from 7,738 in April 2021. Sales fell 14.94 percent month over month from 7,870 units sold in March 2022. Maruti Suzuki has recently eliminated all models with a single airbag.

Tata Tiago (-23.95%) and Hyundai i20 (-5.70%) sales fell YoY to 5,062 and 4,707 units, respectively, while MoM sales grew by 26.49 percent and 0.30 percent. Toyota Glanza sales increased by 21.26 percent year over year to 2,646 units, while MoM sales fell by 11.42 percent from 2,987 units sold in March 2022. The Honda Jazz saw a 277.60 percent increase in sales month over month, from 125 units sold in March 2022 to 472 units sold this month.
