Tata Motors has taken a groundbreaking step toward sustainable transportation by launching India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials. The initiative, backed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, marks a significant shift towards low-carbon and eco-friendly freight mobility.
The official launch event saw the presence of Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, along with Tata Motors' Executive Director Girish Wagh and other key government and industry leaders.
This ambitious project aims to evaluate hydrogen-powered vehicle technology and assess its feasibility for commercial applications in India’s transport ecosystem.
Key Highlights of the Tata Hydrogen Truck Trial
- India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trial
- A 24-month-long pilot project spanning key freight corridors
- 16 hydrogen-powered trucks deployed with different configurations
- Combination of H2-ICE and H2-FCEV technologies
- Trial funded by MNRE under the National Green Hydrogen Mission
- Expansion of India’s hydrogen-based transport infrastructure
24-Month Trial Across Major Freight Routes
Over the next two years, Tata Motors will deploy 16 hydrogen-powered trucks across key industrial and freight hubs in India. These trucks, featuring both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) technologies, will operate along major logistics corridors, including: Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar.
This trial aims to test real-world fuel efficiency, reliability, infrastructure readiness, and the economic viability of hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles.
