Maruti Suzuki Opens India’s Largest In-Plant Railway Siding at Manesar

In a groundbreaking initiative that will change automotive logistics in India, Maruti Suzuki has inaugurated India's largest in-plant rail siding at its Manesar facility. As India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki is demonstrating its focus not only on operational efficiency but also on sustainable logistics and greener modes of transport with this latest move.

So, what does this new rail siding mean for the brand, the environment, and the future of vehicle dispatch in India?

A Game-Changer in Automotive Logistics

With this development, Maruti Suzuki has taken a giant leap toward redefining how cars move across the country. The Manesar railway siding is capable of dispatching a staggering 4.5 lakh vehicles annually, making it the largest automotive railway siding in India.

The facility significantly enhances dispatch capabilities compared to the Gujarat plant, which was launched last year with a 3 lakh annual capacity.

Strategic Partnerships Behind the Project

The new railway siding at Manesar was developed under the Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Limited (HORCL) — a joint venture between:

  • HRIDC (Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation)

  • HSIIDC (Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation)

  • Maruti Suzuki

  • Allcargo Logistics

  • Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority

This collaborative effort ensures a smooth link between the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar and Patil station, which lies 5.2 km away.

Why It Matters: Environmental and Operational Gains

More than just a logistics upgrade, the railway siding promises significant environmental and fuel-saving benefits.

Sustainability Highlights:

  • CO₂ Emissions Avoided: Estimated 1.75 lakh tonnes annually

  • Fuel Saved: 60 million litres per year

  • Vehicles Per Train: 250–270 units using 20 bogies

  • Railway Dispatch Share Goal: 35% by FY 2030–31

Clearly, Maruti Suzuki isn’t just moving cars — it’s shifting towards cleaner and smarter operations.

Maruti Suzuki’s Ongoing Legacy in Railway Logistics

The company was the first in India to obtain the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license over a decade ago. Since then, it has transported more than 25 lakh passenger vehicles via railway.

Notably, in March 2024, Maruti Suzuki became the first automaker to establish an in-plant railway siding at its Gujarat plant, now capable of dispatching 3 lakh cars annually. The new Manesar facility takes this vision several notches higher.

Broader Implications for the Indian Automotive Sector

This move isn't just a win for Maruti Suzuki — it reflects a broader shift in the auto industry. With increased focus on sustainable mobility, carmakers are now evaluating eco-efficient supply chains as seriously as their product lines.

Moreover, logistics innovations like these are especially important for high-volume players like Maruti Suzuki, whose portfolio includes some of the best hatchback cars in India and several cars under 10 lakh, which are distributed across vast geographies.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki's new in-plant railway siding at Manesar is not just another way for it to shift more cars, but about shifting responsibly. As part of the brand's vision, it is aimed at reducing emissions and fuel consumption. When thinking of growing demands for accessible mobility, infrastructure movements like this will continue to allow cars to be shipped to customers faster, cleaner, and more sustainably.

As a changing economy and demand for automakers create a landscape uncertain with Major OEMs declaring insolvency challenges, Maruti Suzuki once again simply proves its not only the market leader but also the leader of innovation and responsibility.
