βΌTata Motors has reported one of its best quarterly performances in a long time, moving 2,01,723 units during the second quarter of the current financial year. This is a 40 per cent increase from 1,44,397 units sold during the same period in the last year, with green powertrains, EVs and CNG models playing a key role in this rise.
A Quarter of Record Growth
The first number stands out: 2,01,723 units sold against 1,44,397 units last year with an increase of 40%. For a manufacturer operating in one of the fiercest environments of the industry, such a growth means that it is not simply a matter of seasonal sales. It shows a shift in customers' preferences.
- Q2 FY27 total sales: 201,723 units
- Q2 FY26 total sales: 144,397 units
- Percentage change vs. previous year: 40%
September Carries the Momentum
Throughout the quarter, September was the month in which the company saw its best performance, accounting for a total of 70,000 units sold. In this total number, the electric vehicles were very significant, amounting to 47,000 units sold in September, which is a huge increase of about 90% in this segment
The CNG segment marked its best quarter ever for the company, or about 28% of total sales. Electric and CNG models combined now account for 51% of all Tata Motors sales, marking an important achievement considering the pace of transformation the company's offering has undergone.

EV and CNG Now Drive Over Half of Sales
This is arguably the most significant data point from the quarter. Crossing the 50 per cent mark for green powertrains means more than half of everything Tata sold in Q2 FY27 came from an EV or a CNG variant.

The scale of this shift matters because it isn't limited to a single model or a short-term promotional push. It spans across Tata's broader portfolio, suggesting genuine, sustained demand for alternative powertrains rather than a one-off spike.
New Models Behind the Push

Three recent additions to Tata's lineup have played a meaningful role in this quarter's numbers:
- Tata Curvv Series X: A newer variant addition to the Curvv range.
- Tata Sierra Legend: An expanded trim within the recently relaunched Sierra lineup.
- Tata Aeris: The newest model in the portfolio, replacing the Tigor entirely.
While the carmaker hasn't broken down exact unit contributions for each of these individually, their recent launches align closely with the timing of this quarter's growth, and all three continue to widen Tata's presence across different price brackets and body styles.
The Tata Punch, notably, remains the company's bestselling model for the quarter, though Tata Motors has not specified a split between its ICE and EV variants.

Tata Aeris: Replacing the Tigor
Among the new additions, the Aeris deserves a closer look since it directly replaces a model that previously anchored Tata's compact sedan lineup. Mechanically, the Aeris carries over much of what made the Tigor work, just with a fresh badge and updated positioning.

Conclusion
Tata Motors reported impressive performance in Q2 of FY27, selling 201,723 units compared to 144,397 during the same period last year. This represents a remarkable growth of 40 percent. Notably, electric and CNG vehicles make up 51 percent of overall sales, fueled by a staggering 90 percent increase in EV sales and achieving the company's highest ever quarterly performance for CNG vehicles. With the Curvv SeriesX, Sierra Legend and the newly launched Aeris adding further depth to the lineup, this quarter signals a carmaker whose growth is increasingly tied to where the Indian market itself is heading.
