The The MG ZS EV passes the Euro NCAP crash test with a five star safety rating

The MG ZS EV has got a 5-star safety rating in the latest Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test. The crash test was done on about 15 cars, including the Audi Q8, Volkswagen Golf, MG ZS EV and Ford Puma.

A five-star safety rating in the crash tests is the highest rating that a car can get. The electric SUV car got a scoring of 34.5 out of 38 points that make 90 percent for the adult occupant protection and 41.7 out of 49 points that make 85 percent for the child occupant protection.

The score of the safety assist system of the MG ZS EV was 9.2 out of 13 points that make 70 percent and the vulnerable road users' rating of the EV was 31 out of 48 points that make 64 percent. In the front as well as the side-impact tests, the car had impacted a rigid barrier and a mobile deformable barrier had impacted the door of the driver side.

The tested model of the car had been properly

equipped with the Autonomous Emergency Braking system (AEB) for the pedestrians and the cyclists in the city and the inter-urban settings, lane keep assist, a reminder for seat belt with load limiters and pre-tensioners and speed assist technologies and the 6 airbags. These were the standard safety features that the EV was equipped with. It is to be noted that the model that will be launched in India will not be equipped with the AEB or the lane keep assist systems.

The safety rating for the MG ZS EV has been applied to both Euro-spec variants of the car namely,  Excite and Exclusive. These variants of the car are offered with one battery pack (a 44.5kWh unit) in the market of the UK and the rest of Europe.

As per the test result, the passenger compartment of the MG ZS EV was stable while the frontal offset test was taken. Dummy readings had shown that the knees were under protection as well as the femurs of the driver and the passenger both. The chest compression reading had indicated a weaker level of protection for the rear passenger. Other than that, for the other body parts, it was adequate.

MG made its debut in India this year with the MG Hector, the brand's first SUV to be sold in the country. The Hector will be followed by the MG ZS EV.

The car has been scheduled to be launched in the month of January 2020. The MG ZS EV will face competition from the Hyundai Kona in the country. In the initial phase of its launch, the EV will be sold in only five cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. The infrastructure is also being set up by MH in these cities as the company has plans to sell approx 3,000 units every year.

The car will come with a 44.5kWh, the liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery powering a synchronous motor that makes 141bhp and a peak torque of 353Nm. The car will also offer the iSmart 2.0 connectivity option with a huge touchscreen. The price of the MG ZS EV has been expected to start from Rs 20 lakh.
