Maruti Suzuki has finally unveiled the Jimny for the Indian market and it comes in a 5-door Avatar. People were eagerly awaiting the launch of Jimny in India. Jimny’s biggest competitor is Mahindra Thar, which has done very well in the Indian market. Mahindra launched a more affordable version of the Thar so that it becomes more competitive with Jimny. The Maruti Jimny measures 3985mm long, 1645mm wide and 1720mm high. Thar stands 3985mm long, 1820mm wide and 1850mm tall. While the length of the two SUVs is the same, the Thar is taller and wider. When it comes to wheelbase though, the Jimny has a 145mm longer wheelbase at 2590mm. However, the Thar has a higher ground clearance of 226mm.

In terms of engine options, the Jimny is only offered with a 1.5-liter K15B petrol engine. It produces 103 PS and 134 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. It comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

The 1.5-liter unit produces 113 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox that only drives the rear wheels. The 2.2-liter diesel engine produces 128 horsepower and 300 Nm, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine produces 148 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. These engines also come with all-wheel drive as standard.

When buying an off-road SUV, off-road driving angles become very important when a person has to go off-road. Thar gets a better approach angle but Jimny gets a better departure angle. On the other hand, the Thar gets a better braking angle due to its shorter wheelbase.

Jimny is offered only as a 5-door version. On the other hand, Mahindra offers the Thar in its 3-door Avatar with a hardtop or canvas. Furthermore, Mahindra is also working on a 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar.

Both SUVs come with cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system, rear parking sensors, hill-hold control, ESP, and hill descent control.

The Thar comes with a tyre pressure monitoring system, adventure statistics, 18-inch alloy wheels, driver's seat height adjustment, roof-mounted speakers, and an Android-compatible 7-inch infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The Jimny gets six airbags, engine start/stop button, headlight washers, automatic LED headlights, and a 9-inch infotainment system that is compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Thar starts at ₹9.99 lakh for the rear-wheel drive variant. The 4WD variants start at ₹13.59 lakh and go up to ₹16.29 lakh. All prices mentioned above are ex-showroom. Jimny pricing is not yet available. However, it is expected to start around 10-12 lakh. Maruti Suzuki has opened bookings worth Rs 11,000 at their Nexa dealerships.
