In a major push towards green mobility, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to explore the real-world potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles in India. This move is part of Hyundai’s vision for sustainable mobility, with the Hyundai Nexo SUV taking the lead in India’s hydrogen journey.
Hyundai Nexo Hits Indian Roads for Real-World Testing
Under this partnership, Hyundai has handed over one unit of the Nexo SUV to IOCL for comprehensive real-world testing. Over a two-year period, the vehicle will cover around 40,000 kilometers on Indian roads.
The testing will cover key areas such as:
- Performance and maintenance in varied Indian conditions
- Reliability and efficiency over long distances
- Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for long-term affordability insights
This initiative will help assess how feasible hydrogen-powered vehicles are for Indian consumers.

Driving the Hydrogen Ecosystem in India

This is not merely a test of a single vehicle. Hyundai and IOCL are establishing the foundation for a more extensive hydrogen infrastructure in India. The test results will assist in assessing the:
- Economic advantages of hydrogen vehicles
- Environmental benefits of emission-free driving
- Potential for hydrogen fuel in India's mobility market
In addition to this, Hyundai is also working with IIT Madras to establish a Hydrogen Innovation Centre — designed to assist startups and technology companies that are developing hydrogen-related components and solutions.
Hyundai's Vision for Clean Energy in India
Discussing the collaboration, Unsoo Kim, MD of HMIL, remarked:
"By hand-in-hand collaboration with Indian Oil, we intend to bring green
hydrogen to India's future mobility affordable, accessible, and sustainable."
Hyundai’s long-term goal is to develop hydrogen as a mainstream fuel option, supporting India’s clean energy targets and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Conclusion
Hyundai and IOCL's partnership is an encouraging step towards introducing hydrogen mobility on Indian roads. Hyundai Nexo's trials will go a long way in deciding India's future direction in clean transportation. As the country moves toward greener solutions, hydrogen may very well prove to be the fuel of the future.
