Expired Delhi EV Policy yet to get an extension

Delhi's electric vehicle (EV) policy which expired on December 31 last year is yet to be extended, leaving customers in the lurch of not being able to get government support to purchase a new electric vehicle.

The policy was supposed to be extended until June of this year, officials said.

According to an official, the extension of the policy was approved by the Delhi government in March but could not be implemented after the model code of conduct came into effect on March 16 with the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls.

The initial electric vehicle policy was notified on August 7, 2020 for a period of three years, and was subsequently extended until December 31, 2023.

"The EV 2.0 policy is still being formulated and there are some points that are yet to be finalized. The current policy will be extended and the file should be cleared within a week," said another official.

The Ministry of Transport and the Delhi Electric Vehicle Cell also held a stakeholder consultation last year as part of the process of formulating the revised 'Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0'.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot had earlier said that the EV 2.0 policy will seek to encourage modernization of vehicles keeping in mind their high cost.

"People want to convert their internal combustion engines into electric ones. This process is expensive. For converting a normal Gypsy, it takes almost ₹5-6 lakh, which is on the higher side," he had said.
