BMW Motorrad India is celebrating its 100-year anniversary by launching a new special edition model of its Corvette R18 in India. This is the fourth variant of the bike that undergoes mainly cosmetic changes and remains unchanged on the hardware front.
The BMW R18 100 Years Edition
While the 100 Year Edition's bodywork remains the same as the other variants, it is adorned what BMW calls a classic chrome paint scheme. This is accompanied by black paint in some areas, high-gloss paint for a spots, and a double white coating on the fuel tank. Adding to its visual appeal are the 100-year badge and the option 719 seat, which features two-tone upholstery with a diamond pattern. Also, on the functional side of things, extras include an Akrapovic exhaust, Pro headlight with adaptive turning light, reversing aid, electronic cruise control, and heated grips, all of which come standard on this trim.
BMW R18 variants and prices
The new 100-year edition of the R18 cruiser is priced at Rs 25.90 lakh, making it the most expensive version of the motorcycle. Meanwhile, other models include the Standard Edition, First Edition and Classic, which are pegged at Rs 19.90 lakh, Rs 22.55 lakh and Rs 24 lakh respectively (all prices are ex-showroom). The difference between the variants is mainly in the color options and accessories.
BMW R18 design and features
The design of the R18 is the highlight of the motorcycle. It beautifully harks back to the BMWs of yore with clean and seductive lines running across the bike with body panels. While the raked-out front end, extra-long wheelbase and low profile are typical of a cruiser, the elements that make the BMW R18 appealing are the double-wide boxer engine, slanted rear shocks with a hollowed-out seat, exhausts double fishtails, and thick-layered front forks.
In contrast to its outdated design, the R18 comes equipped with contemporary features such as full LED lighting, corner lights, reverse, hill start assist, switchable automatic stability control, engine drag torque control, and three driving modes: Rain, Rock, and Roll.
BMW R18 engine and hardware
The R18's engine is the largest twin-displacement boxer engine ever made by BMW. This 1,802 cc air/oil-cooled engine develops 89.84 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 158 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a six-speed gearbox. For hardware, the R18 relies on a double-cradle frame that rides on a set of 16- to 19-inch wheels. For shock absorption, there are telescopic forks and a steel swinging fork, while stopping power comes from a 300cc disc at both ends.
