Ford launches automated driving unit Latitude AI months after winding down Argo

Ford Motor Co on Thursday, launched a new subsidiary of automated driving system, Latitude AI, months after winding down the operations of its former Argo AI Self Driving Technology Unit.

Carmakers including Mercedes-Benz, have ramped up their investments to integrate more autonomous software and autonomous tech into vehicles despite some skepticism on the technology.

Latitude will expand on the company's existing BlueCruise technology of the company, which already offers hands -free road driving on certain models.

Dearborn's Michigan based automaker added that it hired about 550 employees who previously worked at Argo AI for his new subsidiary.

Ford, which jointly operates Argo with Volkswagen Ag, booked a $ 2.7 billion in cash before taxes on his investment in the unit and laid off some employees.
