Driving license is one of those documents that everyone needs to have to be eligible to ride a motorcycle, scooter or car on Indian public roads. Until now, there was only one way to produce driving license to the traffic police. However, things have changed, and there are now better and safer ways to show your license to the authority. In this article, we list three legally acceptable ways to produce driving license to law enforcement agencies.
1: DigiLocker
DigiLocker is a smartphone application that digitises majority of the government documents. Driving license is one of them. Traffic police across the country have been allowed to verify driving licenses through DigiLocker. But to use it, the rider has to a few steps. You will first need to download the app to your phone and register. Next, choose the “Driving License” option on the home page, then choose “Ministry of Roads and Highways” from the options. Once selected, you will be asked to enter your driver's license number. After validation, the application will generate the license in PDF format. This is the document that must be shown to the traffic police if requested.
2: mParivahan
mParivahan is another smartphone app launched by the government that offers a wide range of services. Creating a virtual driver's license is one of them. To use it, you will first need to download and register for the app. Next, select “My Virtual Driver’s License” and then enter your driver’s license number and date of birth to verify it. Once this data is matched, the application will generate a virtual driving licence. This is the document that can be shown to the traffic police upon request. Law enforcement agencies can also check whether the license has been canceled or not by scanning the QR code using their challan equipment.
3: Parivahan
The Parivahan website also offers the service of validating and generating a driving license. However, this process is quite cumbersome and doesn’t make sense for someone who is showing a license through a phone. In addition, access to licensing-related services will not work if there’s no phone network.
4: Hard copy
The final way to produce driving license is by showing the hard copy to the police personnel. But you should know that the law states that you must produce the driving license to the authorities when they request it. This means you can keep the printout and simply show them the details. Most often, the traffic police will withdraw your license and then try to verify its authenticity. In such cases, there have been instances where the authorities misuse their powers. So, always have the license with you and show the necessary details to the authorities.
