Toyota Increases Fortuner Prices and Discontinues Leader Edition

If you were planning to bring home the "Big Daddy" of Indian SUVs, we have some important news for you—and you might want to check your budget again. Toyota Kirloskar Motor has officially hiked the prices of the Toyota Fortuner across the entire lineup.

While the Fortuner remains the undisputed king of the segment, this latest update brings a price jump of up to Rs. 74,000. But that’s not the only change; Toyota has also silently trimmed the lineup by discontinuing the Leader Edition.

The Big Update: Prices Hike & Variants Axed

Toyota has revised prices for both the standard Fortuner and the stylish Legender. The hike ranges between Rs. 51,400 and Rs. 74,000, depending on which variant you pick.

  • Leader Edition Gone: The biggest surprise is the discontinuation of the Fortuner Leader Edition, a variant known for its unique cosmetic add-ons. It is no longer part of the official brochure.
  • GR-S Remains Flagship: The sportier GR-S (Gazoo Racing Sport) variant continues to sit at the top of the food chain. However, it sees the steepest price hike, now commanding an ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 49.59 lakh.

Variant-Wise Breakdown

1. The Standard Fortuner

The bread-and-butter models—available in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations—have seen a significant markup. Whether you choose the Manual (MT) or Automatic (AT), be prepared to pay a premium. The sturdy ladder-frame chassis and road presence remain unchanged, but the entry cost is certainly higher.

2. Toyota Fortuner Legender

The Legender, which is the more aggressive and stylish avatar of the SUV, hasn't been spared either.

  • The Hike: Prices have gone up by up to Rs. 71,000.
  • New Starting Price: The Legender range now starts at Rs. 42.17 lakh (ex-showroom).
  • Options: It continues to be sold in 4x2 and 4x4 trims with an automatic gearbox standard, catering to those who want luxury with their off-road capability.

3. Under the Hood: No Changes Here

While the prices have changed, the mechanicals remain robust as ever.

  • Diesel: The crowd-favorite 2.8-litre turbo-diesel churns out 201 bhp. It delivers 420 Nm of torque in the manual version and a massive 500 Nm in the automatic.
  • Petrol: For those who prefer a quieter drive, the 2.7-litre petrol engine produces 164 bhp and 245 Nm of torque.

Which One Should You Buy?

With the Leader Edition gone and prices up, choosing the right variant is crucial.

  • The City Dweller: If your running is low and you want the Fortuner "swag" without the diesel clutter, the Petrol 4x2 remains a sensible choice, though it lacks the torque punch.
  • The Highway Cruiser: The Legender 4x2 Automatic is the sweet spot. It looks premium, drives effortlessly, and the price hike is justified by the sheer road presence it offers.
  • The Off-Road Enthusiast: Stick to the Standard Fortuner 4x4 MT. You save money over the Legender/GR-S and get the exact same 4x4 hardware and 500 Nm torque durability.

Final Verdict

The Toyota Fortuner has virtually no direct competition in India right now (with the Endeavour gone), which gives Toyota the leverage to increase prices regularly. While the Rs. 74,000 hike is steep, the Fortuner’s resale value and bulletproof reliability continue to attract buyers.

However, the exit of the Leader Edition is a disappointment for those who wanted a distinct look without stretching their budget to the Legender or GR-S.
