Skoda Plans CNG Variant for Kylaq SUV to Offer Greener Drive Option

Skoda Auto is steadily expanding its footprint in India, and the recent launch of the Skoda Kylaq SUV in November 2025 has already attracted urban families and first-time SUV buyers alike. Now, the Czech automaker is taking a forward-looking step by exploring a CNG-powered variant of the Kylaq, aiming to balance performance with affordability and environmental responsibility.

While no official timeline has been confirmed, the move aligns with Skoda India’s broader strategy of offering cleaner alternatives for the value-conscious Indian buyer.

A Natural Next Step for Skoda

India’s appetite for CNG vehicles continues to grow, driven by rising fuel costs and a stronger push for greener mobility. In this context, Skoda Kylaq CNG could be a smart addition to the brand’s local portfolio.

Skoda has already confirmed that it is evaluating CNG compatibility for its turbocharged petrol engines. This includes the very engine currently offered in the Kylaq— a 1.0-litre TSI motor that produces 115 hp and 178 Nm of torque. The current petrol model is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and offers a responsive, punchy drive.

Although adapting a turbo-petrol engine to a CNG setup is technically complex, Skoda isn’t starting from scratch. Internationally, the brand already sells CNG-compatible versions of the Octavia, Scala, and Citigo hatchbacks, giving it a proven base to work from.

Turbo + CNG: Following a Growing Trend

Interestingly, Skoda won’t be the first to combine turbocharging with a CNG powertrain in India. Tata Motors has already introduced a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol CNG engine in the Tata Nexon, offering spirited performance without compromising on fuel efficiency.

Several other sub-4 meter SUVs now offer factory-fitted CNG kits as well. These include:

  • Maruti Suzuki Brezza

  • Maruti Suzuki Fronx

  • Toyota Taisor

  • Nissan Magnite

  • Renault Kiger

So, while Skoda may be late to this space, it’s certainly not too late. The Skoda Kylaq CNG could stand out by combining premium build quality and European styling with the cost efficiency of CNG.

What to Expect from the Kylaq CNG

Though technical specifications are yet to be revealed, here’s what we can reasonably anticipate:

Possible Powertrain Highlights:

  • Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol with CNG tuning

  • Transmission: Likely to retain 6-speed manual; automatic may follow

  • Power & Torque: Slightly lower output on CNG, but still suitable for daily driving

  • Mileage: Could exceed 25 km/kg, offering significant savings at the pump

Equipment & Features:

Skoda is expected to offer the CNG variant across key trims, potentially from the mid-level Signature upwards. Even the current petrol variants come loaded with features like:

  • LED headlamps with DRLs

  • 8-inch infotainment system

  • Cruise control

  • Dual airbags and ABS

  • Rear parking sensors and camera

Skoda Kylaq Variants and Colors

The Skoda Kylaq currently holds the title of being the most affordable SUV in the brand's Indian portfolio. With a starting ex-showroom price of just Rs 7.89 lakh, it aims to appeal to young urban buyers looking for a stylish and efficient SUV without breaking the bank. The Kylaq is available in four main variants – Classic, Signature, Signature Plus, and Prestige – offering flexibility across different budget and feature preferences.

In terms of aesthetics, Skoda has added a splash of color with seven eye-catching shades to choose from. Buyers can pick between Olive Gold, Lava Blue, Tornado Red, Carbon Steel, Brilliant Silver, Candy White, and Deep Pearl Black, each contributing to the Kylaq’s bold road presence.

Standard Fitment or Dealer-Level Kit?

One important point yet to be established is if the Skoda Kylaq CNG will be a factory-fitted or a dealer level retrofit done by the OEM; While both have advantages, typically a factory-fitted CNG system will be better integrated, better warranty coverage and better peace of mind for the customer.

Skoda will probably evaluate customer interest, products available and overall competitive pricing prior to making a decision on the distribution model used!

Final Thoughts

The potential arrival of the Skoda Kylaq CNG illustrates the brand's developing awareness of India's rapidly changing automotive landscape. As eco-conscious mobility choices grow in popularity and demand for affordable alternatives to petrol increases, CNG provides a perfect fit for the needs of pocket-loving urban SUV buyers.

If Skoda is able to provide the refined driving experience everyone knows and loves (without breaking the bank)—then there will be solid demand for the Kylaq CNG. While timelines are still unclear, this is certainly a story to watch for consumers seeking practical, premium, and planet-wise options.
