Mercedes-Benz has launched the new AMG S 63 E-Performance in India with prices starting from Rs 3.30 crore (ex-showroom). The launch marks the return of the high-performance S-Class to the Indian market after a few years. The AMG S-Class was previously sold in coupe body styles in India based on the previous generation S-Class, although it has since been discontinued with the launch of the current-generation model which is offered only as a four-door sedan globally.
The AMG S-Class will initially be available in the Limited Edition 1 variant at a price of Rs 3.8 million (ex-showroom). This will later make the way for the standard model priced at Rs 3.3 crore (ex-showroom).
Starting with the exterior, the AMG S-Class features a more aggressive styling package with an AMG Panamericana grille, sharper bumpers, larger alloy wheels, and a quad-tip exhaust at the rear. Edition 1 models also get styling touches like the AMG Night package or black exterior trim, matte black alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and an Edition 1-branded car cover. Some of these parts will likely to be made available as options on the standard S 63.
Inside, you get the bells and whistles from the regular S-class accentuated by sportier choice of color options and interior trim that match the AMG badge on the boot. Updated design touches include special AMG software for the infotainment touchscreen, AMG exclusive Nappa leather, AMG steering wheel, carbon fiber inserts and AMG illuminated panels. Edition 1 models also feature model-specific markings on the center console.
As with all large Mercedes models, the 63 badge indicates that the car is powered by the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine used by a variety of Mercedes-AMG models. However, here a hybrid propulsion system is added (hence the E-Performance brand), which raises the total power and torque to 791 HP and 1,430 Nm of maximum torque. The S 63 E-Performance reaches a top speed of 250 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. Owners can adjust performance in seven drive modes.
The PHEV system has a 13.1 kWh battery that allows the vehicle to be driven up to 33 km solely on electric power. This high-performance luxury sedan also features AMG's adaptive air suspension system, which lowers the vehicle by 10 mm at speeds above 120 km per hour. All-wheel drive with torque vectoring and rear-wheel steering is standard on the Edition 1.
The AMG S-Class lacks direct competitors in the Indian market, and neither Audi nor BMW offer performance-focused derivatives of the A8 and 7 Series internal combustion A8 and 7-Series in the market.
