From rugged SUVs to sustainable EVs, these brands are tapping into evolving consumer preferences and delivering on innovation and performance. Let’s dive deeper into how these companies performed and what’s fueling their success.

Mahindra & Mahindra: SUV King Continues to Reign

Mahindra & Mahindra, one of India’s most iconic automotive giants, posted total sales of 84,110 units, marking a 17% growth compared to May 2024. The standout performer was again Mahindra’s SUV lineup, which saw domestic sales rise by a robust 21%, reaching 52,431 units.

Segment Breakdown:

  • Utility Vehicles (Total, including exports): 54,819 units

  • Light Commercial Vehicles (2-3.5T): 17,718 units (↑ 14%)

  • Sub-2T LCVs: Declined 18% YoY

  • Three-Wheelers (including EVs): 6,635 units (↑ 11%)

  • Exports: 3,652 units (↑ 37%)

Mahindra's performance is a testament to its versatile SUV range including models like the Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV700, and Bolero Neo. The company also continues to gain ground in the electric segment, as its BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) portfolio expands.

What Mahindra Says:

Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the Automotive Division, stated:

“Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our ICE and BEV portfolio.”

Year-to-date, Mahindra’s passenger vehicle sales are up by 24%, with total exports showing a staggering 55% growth, indicating strong international traction.

Kia India: Consistent Growth Backed by Smart Launches

Kia India, known for stylish design and advanced features, recorded 22,315 units sold in May 2025, reflecting a 14.43% YoY growth. This marks five consecutive months of positive sales growth for the brand in the Indian market.

Key Drivers of Growth:

  • Carens remains a family favorite with its spacious cabin and high feature list.

  • The newly launched Kia Clavis attracted impressive bookings, adding fresh momentum.

  • Kia’s focus on segment-first tech, safety, and stylish design continues to appeal to Indian customers.

Kia's well-balanced portfolio—ranging from compact SUVs like Sonet, mid-size Seltos, and MPVs like Carens—has helped it build a stronghold in competitive segments.

Official Statement:

Hardeep Singh Brar, Sr. VP at Kia India, said:

“The tremendous response to the Carens underscores the deep trust Indian families place in the Kia brand. With Clavis, we aim to redefine the segment.”

The brand also teased a new model launch in July 2025, expected to bring eco-friendly and tech-updated features, aligning with modern mobility trends.

JSW MG Motor India: Electrifying Growth with EV Leadership

JSW MG Motor India registered 6,304 units in May 2025, a massive 40% jump from 4,510 units in May 2024. The key growth lever? A surging electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, particularly the MG Windsor and its PRO variants.

Why MG Stands Out:

  • The Windsor EV is praised for its balance of affordability, performance, and smart features.

  • MG has built a strong identity in India's premium and electric car segments with models like ZS EV, Comet, and the new Gloster Hybrid.

In April 2025, MG had already recorded 5,829 units, showing that its EV strategy is producing consistent results. The company’s focus on range, charging solutions, and tech-driven interiors is clearly resonating with the urban and eco-conscious buyer.

Company’s Perspective:

“With the impressive performance of the MG Windsor and its variants, JSW MG has strengthened its position as one of India’s most trusted and leading EV brands.”

Conclusion

May 2025 was a winning month for Mahindra, Kia, and JSW MG Motor India, each thriving on distinct brand strengths—be it rugged SUVs, family-focused MPVs, or electric innovations. Their strong sales figures reflect not just a recovery in the automotive market, but a shift in consumer preferences toward tech-enabled, future-ready, and sustainable vehicles.

With upcoming launches and growing portfolios, these brands are not just participating in India’s auto revolution—they’re leading it.
