JSW First SUV Jetour T2 Set for India Debut by Diwali

Remember the excitement when new global players like Kia or MG first entered the Indian market? It felt like a breath of fresh air in terms of design and technology. Well, get ready for that feeling again because a massive new player is about to enter the Indian automotive ring.

JSW Motors is gearing up to launch its very first passenger vehicle in India. The company is aiming straight for the festive season rush, with a debut scheduled just before Diwali. Their challenger? A rugged, premium SUV based on the globally popular Jetour T2.

Here is everything we know so far about this upcoming hybrid beast.

The Big Debut: JSW Meets Jetour

So, what is the connection here? JSW Group is entering the fiercely competitive car market, and for their debut product, they are utilizing the platform of the Jetour T2. Jetour is a premium sub-brand of Chery Automobile, established in 2018, known specifically for its SUVs and crossovers.

Confirming the timeline in a recent interaction with CNBC-TV18, Parth Jindal, Managing Director, reaffirmed that preparations for the launch are progressing smoothly for the upcoming festive season. This launch marks a significant milestone as JSW Motors begins its journey as a full-fledged car manufacturer in India.

Furthermore, JSW isn't just bringing another petrol-guzzling SUV. They are aligning with the vision of sustainable mobility by introducing it with a modern hybrid powertrain right from day one.

Design: Think Land Rover Defender, But Different

Let’s talk about the looks because this SUV definitely has road presence. One glance at the Jetour T2, and you will spot the inspiration. It possesses that bold, boxy, upright stance reminiscent of iconic off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender.

It is built on a robust monocoque frame, which should balance rugged capability with on-road comfort.

Key Dimensions:

Make no mistake, this is a substantial vehicle. It is designed to offer immense cabin space.

  • Length: 4,785 mm
  • Width: 2,006 mm (That’s over 2 meters wide!)
  • Height: 1,875 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,800 mm

With these dimensions, the SUV will feature a practical five-seat layout, ensuring plenty of room for families.

Powering the Beast: The Hybrid Advantage

Globally, the Jetour T2 is offered with conventional internal combustion engines. However, JSW Motors has opted for a different, more future-proof approach for India.

They will be introducing the Jetour T2 i-DM, which stands for their Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) variant.

  • The Engine: Under the hood, it is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a sophisticated hybrid system.
  • The Output: This combination blends efficiency with performance, delivering a healthy 156 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque.

This setup is expected to balance practicality with innovation. The electric assistance will be perfect for silent, efficient urban commutes, while the petrol engine takes over for those long highway journeys without any range anxiety.

While the international model comes in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, it remains to be seen which version will be offered to Indian buyers initially.
