Toyota to launch 3 new SUVs in India, including next-gen Fortuner

Toyota recently introduced the Innova Hycross and Hyryder SUVs models to the Indian market. Looking to expand its SUV offering over the next two to three years, the Japanese automaker plans to launch additional models. Among those to be launched this year is a coupe SUV based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. Additionally, Toyota is developing the next-generation Fortuner SUV, which is expected to launch in 2025.

Toyota is reportedly developing a new three-row SUV for the Indian market. Based on the globally sold Corolla Cross SUV, this SUV will be built on the TNGA-C platform, which also underpins the recently launched Innova Hycross. In India, the seven-seater Corolla Cross SUV will compete with models like the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700 and Jeep Meridian.

With a 2,850mm wheelbase, the Toyota Innova Hycross is superior to the 5-seater Corolla Cross, which has a 2,640mm wheelbase. To accommodate an additional set of seats, Toyota may increase the wheelbase by about 150mm. The new 3-row SUV will likely feature the same engine options as the Hycross, including a 172-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine and a 186-hp 2.0-liter petrol engine with Toyota's self-charging strong hybrid technology.

The next generation Fortuner is scheduled to make its global debut in 2024. The SUV will feature an all-new design, an updated interior, and a new engine option. It will be built on Toyota's latest TNGA-F architecture, which also serves as the foundation for the Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser SUVs. This platform is capable of supporting a wheelbase from 2850mm to 4180mm. The new Fortuner will come with a new diesel engine that features a mild hybrid system. The 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV diesel engine will have an integrated starter generator.

The upcoming Toyota SUV Coupe, codenamed A15, will be based on the Fronx crossover model and is expected to incorporate design elements from the Yaris Cross. It will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, including a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder Boosterjet Turbo and a 1.2-litre 2-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine, both featuring Suzuki's mild-hybrid technology.
