Sony Starts Testing Sony Vision-S Electric Car On Public Roads

It was last year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 in January when Sony surprised everyone by showing us its Vision-S all-electric vehicle. The Japanese tech giant has unveiled an electrical prototype that comes packed with cutting-edge technologies including camera sensors, entertainment systems, and more. Sony's Vision-S prototype arrived in Tokyo in July 2020 to develop sensor and audio technologies. Although the car is not expected to go on sale anytime soon, it appears that the company has begun testing the electric vehicle on public roads in Austria.

The Japanese company, created by an in-house AI and robotics team, claims to be fully road-tested. This is just to ensure that the EV and Sony Vision-S platform comply with applicable safety standards and regulations. Moreover, Sony is also working on the Magna-Steyr to ensure the car is well equipped to hit the road in Europe.
Sony's driverless prototype comes with 33 sensors that can easily sense people and other vehicles inside and outside the vehicle to provide driving support. It takes advantage of the brand's expertise in imaging, entertainment, and sensors, which can be used in the next generation of electric vehicles. The company is already supplying Japanese automakers with these technologies, however, now it wants to develop an individual product that can be supplied as an all-purpose solution.

Sony has not shared any details of what powers the car. However, she revealed some key specs of the car. In terms of dimensions, this Sony concept vehicle is 4,895 mm in length, 1900 mm in width, and 1450 mm in height. The wheelbase and ground clearance of the vehicle is 3000 mm and 120 mm (up to 135 mm) respectively. The company claims the Vision-S can run from 0 to 100 mph in just 4.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 240 km/h.

It is also equipped with Sony 360 Reality Audio technology that ensures an unprecedented and immersive audio experience. The company uses object-based spatial sound technology to recreate vivid realism. Each seat comes with individual speakers built-in so each passenger can enjoy their music in their seat with the option of custom sound configuration. In addition, there is a panoramic screen that offers a variety of content that the driver and passengers can access.
